Nicki Elson and College Nostalgia = Three Daves
Nicki Elson, author of Three Daves, has graciously stopped by to talk about the inspiration behind her novel. Julie really enjoyed Three Daves and recommend it to any adult romance/chicklit fan. You can read her review here.
Happy Blogoversary to A Tale of Many Reviews! It’s awesome to have a place that brings together readers with books and authors they may otherwise never have heard of. I’m excited and honored to get to be a part of the celebration—especially because I’m also celebrating the brand new cover for my 1980s Chick Lit/Romance novel, Three Daves.
You could say the idea for the story started back in the fall of 1985 when I moved into the dorm for freshman year of college—and all my stuff was packed in boxes with a big red “Virgin” scrawled across the sides. Yes, my dad was happy about it, but no, he wasn’t the one who wrote it on there. The real story’s much less interesting: I had a summer job selling T-shirts at a local concert venue and Virgin Records supplied the Ts, and thus the boxes I confiscated for packing.
Virgin Records was a totally cool thing to advertise, but being a virgin, not so much. Even though Three Daves isn’t autobiographical, a lot of the emotions in it were inspired by my own peculiar status as a good girl in an environment that wasn’t entirely conducive to staying so. As with the big red “Virgin,” the real story’s not all that interesting, so it was great fun to use my creative license to put a whole new twist on the story of the good girl.
Something I wanted to explore in Three Daves was one girl’s relationship with three very different types of guys. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to write the kind of story where the two main protagonists are each other’s one and only loves. I know it’s fiction and fairy tales are a nice escape, but I guess I like it when the fairy tale can be fitted into reality. Like, can’t a girl partake of three Prince Charmings and still get a terribly romantic happily-ever-after with her knight in shining armor? And better yet, can’t the knight have a few chinks in his armor but still be made especially for her?
I’ll be honest though, the driving force to get me to actually sit my bum down and write the story was my nostalgia for the 1980s and college life. It was too much fun immersing in my mix “tapes” and thinking back on all the care-free, silly, good times. But the story really could’ve been set in any era. As a matter of fact, Julie, who reviewed Three Daves for A Tale of Many Reviews, didn’t care for the 80s setting, but she still enjoyed the story—which made me so happy, because I hoped the story could stand on its own without the kitsch of the 80s…as fun as that kitsch might be for some of us.
It wouldn’t be a party without presents, so I’ll be giving away an eBook copy of Three Daves. If you don’t win, no worries—all eBook formats (Kindle, Nook, eBook and ePack) are on sale in September for 99 cents as part of the Omnific Publishing Back-to-School Sale!

It was so much fun to learn more about Nicki and the Three Daves. I love the idea of there being more than one perfect someone for a person and I’m looking forward to reading this novel. Thanks for sharing!
Hey, Cherie! Thanks so much for stopping by. Glad the idea of more than one perfect someone intrigues you—hope you enjoy the Daves.
Nice to know your story can transcend its time setting and reach a wider audience!
Thanks, Alex!
Sounds like a great read!
It is a great read. The description threw me at first, wasn’t quite sure, but you end up pulling for these characters and it wasn’t what I expected. I enjoyed it.
Once again, Julie, your kind words about Three Daves make me
Thanks so much for having me as part of the Blogoversary Celebration!
Aw, thanks Missy. I’m so happy you think the premise sounds good—it was great fun to write and I hope as good to read.
Like Cherie, I enjoy the idea of not limiting the heroine to one love. Jen deserves many Daves! I hadn’t heard that Virgin story before *snorts*. I can like totally imagine moving into the dorm with those boxes at my undergraduate college!
Hey Jen, thanks for coming by.
Hehe, yep, the boxes were pretty fun.
I’m going to read the 3 Dudes when it comes out, sounds like a great story about a girl dating 3 different guys, all with the same first name. Hey, it’s only 99 cents, what have I got to lose?
Three Dudes, hehehe. If you ever do read the book, methinks you’re going to have to take some inspiration from the story and post recipes for shots with naughty names on your blog!
